Crockery, Cutlery and Glassware

I’m a real believer in presenting food well to make people want to eat it. Having attractive dishes to eat off is half the battle for entertaining. Your crockery doesn’t have to be posh; some of my favourite plates are my informal risotto / pasta bowls with a picture of a hen on the bottom! Here’s a list of tableware to help you impress:

  • look at the colour of your plates and see if the colours will complement or clash with your food. You can either use a matching dinner service or a deliberate mish-mash of plate styles can be fun too!
  • heavyweight cutlery and / or white heavy cotton or linen tablecloth if you want to create the feeling of luxury
  • glasses – it’s your choice as to whether you prefer cut glass or plain glass / crystal, but again matching will create a good impression. Don’t forget to add extra glasses and a jug of iced water on the table.
  • metal balti dishes for serving curry – it gives your guests the feeling that they are out for a meal somewhere special
  • knickerbocker glory glasses – they make your puddings look spectacular, even if you’re only serving some ice-cream with sliced fruit. Use long spoons to complete the look!
